Best Leather Satchel — Buyer’s Guide and Reviews -

With all the different types of handbags out there, it seems that few of them can cover every purpose. Either the bag is too large and cumbersome or too small does not hold enough of the daily necessities. Moreover, the different handles and straps are never right either. This is where the leather satchel comes in handy.

The top 10 most popular Leather Satchel based on sales on the website BestReviews.Tips. Updated daily.

1. Kate Spade New York Cedar Street Maise Satchel – Best Convertible Leather Satchel

kate-spade-new-york-Cedar-Street-Maise-Satchel-Snapdragon

Kate Spade boasts a reputation for sophistication and class due in a large part to the eponymous founder who started out as an accessories editor for Mademoiselle magazine. While originally limiting the line to just six different types of handbag, the company began to expand their lineup in 2007 when Kate SPade stepped down as head designer. Since then, the company has tackled every type of handbag design–including the leather satchel.

True to its purpose, this satchel is one of the larger on our list–though it is by no means a large handbag. Moreover, the relatively long handle drop of 6” allows this bag to be carried as a traditional shoulder bag or as a crossbody satchel–for certain women. Unfortunately, this really only applies to petite women.

Otherwise, the actual shoulder drop the strap is a bit short to be worn crossbody and the handle drop is far too short to rest comfortably on the shoulder. Still, this satchel is made from Saffiano leather but is also one of the more expensive leather satchels on our list.

Pros
  • Is one of the larger leather satchels on our list
  • Provides a decent sized handle drop
  • Saffiano leather is a decent quality
Cons
  • One of the more expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Features a fairly short drop for a leather satchel
  • Does not offer many compartments

2. The Sak Kendra Satchel Handbag – Best Shoulder Bag Leather Satchel

The-Sak-Kendra-Satchel-Handbag-Stone-Canyon-Perforated

In some way similar to the previous entry on our list, the Sak Kendra brand got its start by producing a fairly narrow line of handbags. However, rather than having the pedigree of a fashion magazine editor at the helm, Sak Kendra relied on the wanderlust and sharp eye of its founders while travelling in Bali.

While the brand may have evolved from its humble rattan origins, it still keeps its principles alive with a handcrafted construction and offering their products at a reasonable price. In fact, this is the least expensive leather satchel shoulder bag on our list by far. However, it is also the most unique–one of the primary ways in that it is not truly a satchel at all.

With no strap that can be worn crossbody, the Sak Kendra actually either fits in either the handbag or shoulder bag category–depending on what you require from a shoulder bag’s handle drop. However, in that regard, this is the second best item on our list with a deep 9” handle drop–often more than enough to be worn for a shoulder bag.
Pros
  • The least expensive leather satchel on our list
  • Is one of the larger leather satchels on our list
  • Features a large handle drop
Cons
  • Not truly a satchel without a drop shoulder strap
  • Does not offer many compartments
  • Zipper does not close all the way

3. Michael Kors Women’s Selma Medium Top Zip Satchel – Most Styled Leather Satchel

Michael-Kors-Womens-Selma-Satchel-Blossom

Michael Kors is one of the most famous brands in designers in the fashion industry. Winning awards and accolades in numerous categories, the blending of glamour and restraint shines through every design. Moreover, the brand is known for all types of fashion products that spans both men and women’s lines.

The Michael Kors leather crossbody satchel definitely seeks to make a statement and does so by offering a wealth of styles to choose from. With over thirty six different styles, this women’s designer satchel bag definitely surpasses all of its competitors on our list in terms of aesthetic options. Moreover, the quality of this satchel is not merely limited to its design.

This satchel uses Saffiano leather which is both one of the best quality leathers used for handbags as well as soft and supple. Furthermore, this satchel also includes feet on the bottom to keep the bag from sitting completely on the floor. The only downside is both the handle and shoulder drop are a bit short.
Pros
  • Comes in a massive 36 different styles
  • Saffiano leather is a decent quality
  • Bottom feet keep the purse off the ground
Cons
  • One of the more expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Features a fairly short drop for a leather satchel
  • Features a short handle drop

4. Fossil Sydney Satchel – Best Crossbody Leather Satchel

Fossil-Sydney-Satchel-1

While not necessarily known as a women’s fashion brand, Fossil offers a number of products in the bag accessory market–both for men and women. However, this brand definitely has a male slant and it shows in its fairly utilitarian design. With few frills or styles to choose from, Fossil aims to provide a decent satchel with an eye to comfort and real world use.

For one, this is the second, but one of the few satchels on our list, to feature bottom feet that keep the satchel off of the ground. Numerous other satchels on our list provide studs on the bottom, but they generally do not lift the satchel completely off the ground. Another nod to function over form, the Fossil also comes with a 23” shoulder drop strap which allows it to sit comfortably crossbody.

However, this is not necessarily an every situation bag. For one, the two compartments provided are the fewest on the list. As such, if you carry a number of small items, they will likely scatter and settle along the bottom of the vintage leather satchel handbag. Moreover, genuine leather is the lowest quality of leather used for handbags.

Pros
  • One of the less expensive vintage leather satchels on our list
  • Provides a solid length shoulder drop
  • Bottom feet keep the purse off the ground
Cons
  • Features the fewest compartments on our list
  • Provides the shortest handle drop on our list
  • Genuine leather is the lowest quality

5. Pijushi Embossed Crocodile Purse Satchel – Best Large Leather Satchel

Pijushi-Embossed-Crocodile-Purse-Brown

Pijushi is another unique company on our list in that it is not attached to a famous designer or brand. Instead, Pijushi saw what the future of the internet held in store and uses Amazon as its exclusive seller. While this may have led the brand to fly a bit under the radar, its unique style and exquisite designs justify it alongside any of the fashion industry titans on our list.

Moreover, by not having the same degree of prestige as a more well-known brand, the Pijushi is able to provide designer quality at a fairly reasonable cost. However, this satchel does suffer from a few design features that might turn off a specific subset of consumers. Specifically, this is a fairly large satchel.

Of course, if you are looking for a larger handbag, then this is a godsend. Aside from being the largest satchel on our list, it also boasts a large number of compartments. However, that size, combined with the crocodile embossing–that just so happens to leave a strong chemical odor–makes this one of the heaviest satchels on our list even when empty.
Pros
  • One of the less expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Offers a large number of compartments
  • Is the largest leather satchel on our list
Cons
  • Features a fairly short drop for a leather satchel
  • Crocodile treatment leaves a chemical odor
  • The heaviest leather satchel on our list

6. Coach Christie Carryall in Crossgrain Leather – Best Quality Leather Satchel

Coach-Christie-Carryall-Khaki

Coach has long been known as a leader in designer women’s handbags, but the company actually has a far more storied history as a maker of fine leather products in general. Moreover, their product line spans a whole range of leather products for both genders. As such, it should come as little surprise that the Coach satchel also uses the highest quality leather out of any product on our list.

The crossgrain leather of the Coach crossbody satchel is similar to top grain with a slight difference. While top grain uses the most exterior layer to make the leather, the cross grain uses layers closer to the middle. This allows the leather to maintain is softness and light weight while also providing a bit more durability than most other top grain leather.

However, this specific shoulder satchel handbag is a bit uncharacteristic for the Coach line. The brand prides itself on quality and makes it a point to demonstrate this by providing each product with a traceable serial number and certificate of authenticity. Unfortunately, this specific Coach product does not include either of those, and the tag even differs in the standard message which generally accompanies all Coach products.

Pros
  • One of the less expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Provides a solid length shoulder drop
  • Crossgrain leather is better than genuine
Cons
  • Offers a relatively short handle drop
  • Does not offer many compartments
  • Does not come with authentication

7. Brahmin Duxbury Satchel Convertible Top-Handle Bag – Best Carry Leather Satchel

Brahmin-Duxbury-Satchel-Pecan

Brahmin is one of the few brands on our list that explicitly specializes in handbags, though they do offer a number of other accessories. Still, the focus rests on handbags and leather ones in particular. Moreover, Brahmin handbags are handmade and use some of the finest crafting techniques to ensure their products are both luxurious and durable.

Why celebrities are obsessed with Anya Hindmarch?

Of course, this attention to detail comes at a cost, and in this instance that is quite literal. This is the most expensive leather satchel on our list. Still, it accomplishes a number of things that few other competitors manage in one fell swoop. First, this is a fairly large crossbody satchel, however it also manages to avoid the trap of others by being surprisingly light as well. Moreover, the Brahmin’s 24” shoulder drop strap is one of the longest on our list.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the handle drop meaning that you cannot use this as a shoulder bag as well. Moreover, the few compartments combined with the larger size will make finding smaller items held within a bit of a dig. Still, the large main compartment is ideal for carrying bigger items like a tablet.

Pros
  • Provides a solid length shoulder drop
  • Is one of the larger leather satchels on our list
  • Surprisingly light for its size
Cons
  • The most expensive leather satchel on our list
  • Features a short handle drop
  • Does not offer many compartments

8. Anuschka 469 DNP Bag – The Best Hobo Leather Satchel

Anuschka-469-DNP-Bag-Lush-Lilac

Much like Brahmin, Anuschka is another brand of designer handbags that is a smaller company known for handcrafting unique designs. However, Anuschka takes that a step further by employing artisans to hand paint the designs on each of their bags. The result is that each handbag is unique as well as gorgeous.

In terms of this particular satchel, the designs are a bit limited though exquisite. On top of the beautiful designs, this hobo satchel also takes a page from current trends by using a BoHo style design. Moreover, this satchel offers the largest handle drop. This allows the Anuschka to be comfortably used as a shoulder bag if desired.

Unfortunately, the shoulder drop is actually the shortest on our list. As such, a crossbody arrangement will only be possible for more petite customers. Moreover, while the designs and construction are all handmade, the use of genuine leather–instead of top grain–is a bit disappointing.

Pros
  • Offers the most number of compartments
  • Provides the largest handle drop
  • Handpainted and fabric interior are nice touches
Cons
  • One of the more expensive leather satchels on our list
  • The shortest shoulder drop on our list
  • Genuine leather is the lowest quality

9. Rebecca Minkoff Micro-Moto Satchel Crossbody Bag – Best Small Leather Satchel

Rebecca-Minkoff-Micro-Moto-Satchel-Pale-Sage

Rebecca Minkoff is a brand more in line with Michael Kors or Kate Spade whereby the designer is acclaimed as well as innovative and adds prestige to amazing designs. In fact, Rebecca Minkoff herself is responsible for the iconic “I love NY” design. Since then, she has specialized in women’s fashion, often pushing the envelope in terms of design.

The Rebecca Minkoff leather satchel is no different as the extended tassels and thick zipper paired with the smallest profile on our list make a striking contrast. However, those zippers are more than for show as the various zippered closures and thick stitches all add a robust durability to a design that favors the ostentatiously elegant.

Moreover, this mini satchel bag also offers a decent should drop length of 25 ½”. The shoulder drop combined with the small profile make this a satchel that will fit just about anybody. Unfortunately, it is not ideal for all situations. Still, the small profile is somewhat compensated for by a wealth of compartments that allow easy organization of the various items you might carry.
Pros
  • Provides a solid length shoulder drop
  • Offers a large number of compartments
  • Durable and features quality zipper enclosures
Cons
  • One of the more expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Features a short handle drop
  • Genuine leather is the lowest quality

10. Calvin Klein On My Corner Saffiano LT – Best Compartment Leather Satchel

Calvin-Klein-On-My-Corner-Saffiano-LT-Satchel-Metallic-Taupe

Much like Michael Kors, Calvin Klein is a juggernaut in the fashion industry. Originally started as a coat shop in New York, the brand grew to incorporate all styles of clothing for all genders at a fairly reasonable price. Moreover, this is by far the legacy brand we reviewed with almost fifty years of trendsetting since its inception.

The Calvin Klein satchel continues the philosophy of the brand in that it is both a quality designer product that is less expensive than many other products on our list. However, this satchel is definitely a bit more limited in the aesthetics department with only two different styles to choose from–the least out of any fashion brand.

However, this satchel is definitely meant to be an everyday bag. It is one of the largest satchels on our list and also features the most compartments. Moreover, while the styles may be few, the neutral colors are appropriate for pretty much every setting and occasion. Still, the short handle and shoulder drop do limit this satchel as a handbag for larger women.
Pros
  • One of the less expensive leather satchels on our list
  • Offers the most number of compartments
  • Is one of the larger leather satchels on our list
Cons
  • Features a fairly short drop for a leather satchel
  • Provides a somewhat short handle drop
  • Satchel bag for women only comes in two different styles

Buyer’s Guide:

Leather:

Even though a leather satchel is made from leather, that does not mean all leather satchels are the same quality. Depending on how the leather was tanned and treated will determine what type of quality it is. This goes well beyond what animal skin was used.

What wiki says about leather satchel.

The different layers of skin will provide different qualities of leather. Moreover, the solution used to tan the skin into leather will also play an important role in its overall feel and durability. Finally, uncommon skins require their own unique processes to make them usable.

Genuine

It might seem odd, but “Genuine Leather” is the lowest quality leather used in handbags. Generally, genuine leather is made from numerous thin pieces of leather that have been glued or otherwise treated to adhere to one another. While this does not mean that genuine leather is inherently poor quality, it does often indicate that the bag will not be as durable as those made from higher qualities of leather.

Top Grain

Top grain leather is made by removing the thicker layers of skin, sanding them down, and using the topmost layer. This is the middle grade of leather used for handbags, though it is often the best in terms of function. While it is not absolutely the most durable type of leather, it is often lighter and much easier to manipulate than thicker leathers. Various types of treatments and buffings to create texture are easier to apply to top grain leather than thicker, more durable leather.

Full Grain

This is considered the highest quality of leather and is often the most expensive as well. Full grain leather uses the entire skin in its construction and is far more durable and water tolerant than lesser types of leather. However, full grain leather is also significantly heavier than top grain or genuine leather which is a primary issue when it is used to make handbags or totes. Moreover, full grained leather also takes more time and effort to treat with various stylings, embossings, and other decorative features.

Exotic

Exotic leathers are generally those that come from reptiles or large fowl, like ostriches. This type of leather is far different than leather made from the skin of bovines and cervines, cow and deer family respectively. This type of leather, if treated properly during the tanning process, is generally the most durable. However, it is also extremely thick, heavy, and stiff. Moreover, it is also the most expensive.

Lining:

Arguably just as important as the outside, the inside of a leather satchel can offer numerous qualities that make it either delightful or frustrating. The way the lining is adhered to the satchel will go a long way in determining this, but the material is often more important.

So long as the lining is sewn into the leather of the satchel with a solid gauge of high quality string and not just glued to the inside, there will be no complaints. However, what the lining is made out of will often determine how durable it is as well as a number of other qualities.

Cloth

This is the least common type of material used for the lining of all handbags and totes, not just leather satchels. Cotton is the most common type of cloth used for handbag linings, though silk and other fabrics are employed as well. Cloth is less durable and more prone to staining than synthetic materials. Moreover, cloth is more expensive than synthetic materials as well.

Polyester

Polyester is the most common material used for handbag lining for a few reasons. First and foremost, it is far less expensive than cloth. However, polyester is also more durable and lighter than cotton. Moreover, polyester is also one of the most water and stain resistant materials used for handbag lining, regardless the style or exterior material.

Nylon

Unless you are looking for the luxury of silk or some other high-end fabric, your best bet for the lining of a handbag rests with nylon. Nylon is a fairly durable fiber that resist puncture better than both polyester or most types of cloth. Moreover, nylon is somewhat water resistant and resists staining better than cloth–though not better than polyester. It is also exceptionally light and almost as inexpensive as polyester.

Conclusion:

As we can see, the nuances of both design and function will ultimately determine which is the best leather satchel for you. Of course, as an accessory that also happens to carry things, these preferences resist the form v function dichotomy. Instead, finding the right blend of the two is essential.

If you are looking for a leather satchel that can carry around everything you could ask and more, then you will definitely be looking for a larger model. The Pijushi, Brahmin, and Calvin Klein all fit this bill. However, the Brahmin offers few compartments which limits its general purpose a bit, but makes it idea for carrying larger items like a tablet.

On the other end of the spectrum, smaller leather satchels often make for a more refined statement–giving up some utility for aesthetics. In this instance, the Rebecca Minkoff or the Coach are the best bet with the Coach also using the highest quality leather. Still, few leather satchels can make as broad a fashion statement as the Michael Kors which boasts thirty six different designs.
